I have worked on a lot of interior projects over the last 9 years and most of the time lighting tends to take a backseat with most clients. Lighting always seems to be just an add on option if the budget can be stretched, and if the budget cannot be stretched, then it always ends with the standard exposed bulb holders, which I have deeply rooted distaste for. Even if the interiors are being done “only for rental purpose” there is always a way to stay on a budget and get lighting fitted, to at least serve the purpose. Lighting plays an important role along with the rest of interior design and the role that your apartment will play to suit your living conditions and activities.
To properly light a space, it requires the perfect combination of general/ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.
General/Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting is the primary and a basic requirement for a space, where light is spread in a uniform manner. Without ambient lighting basic visual tasks and movement is restricted. This lighting is normally supplied overhead. These are of two types; Direct lighting and Indirect lighting.
Task lighting
Task lighting as the name suggests aims to create high intensity light for a focused task. For example, in the kitchen when cutting or cooking is the work undertaken.
Accent Lighting
When you want an object or surface to be focused on, accent lighting will draw attention to that detail meant for highlighting.
There are a lot of lighting techniques, where light is played with to create a desired look and feel, for example cove lighting, downlighting, wall washing/ grazing, etc.
With these primary lighting options in place for your apartment, is when you can achieve the revered look from an interior magazine, it also helps with your day to day tasks as well.
Eventually it comes down to how lighting has been applied to your apartment space.
While experimenting sometimes is a good idea, with lighting it might be a good idea to consult a professional, otherwise it may turn into an expensive affair with bad results.
